Earth Day

April 22nd, 2009

Conservatives should really learn to conserve resources rather then using them up as quickly as possible. Will it take the earth to reject us completely before they come to their senses?

On a brighter note, I solved my issues, and the website can be found at 365yesterdays.com. So the website is all set up with placeholders at the moment though, but I’m sure I’ll have a comic up by the end of the day. For now I’m going to go swimming.

Also I ended up using comicpress rather then manga+press. Mostly because it worked.

Cheers, as I’m off to go swimming. Excuse me while I kiss the sky?

On the Nature of Comics and Whatnot

April 21st, 2009

Well, upgraded WP to 2.7.1 and forgot the spot for my twitter boxes AGAIN, so I’ll have to track that down and update it. Trying to think right now how I can update my website as a comic, and whether or not to have it as a seperate addy that redirects here or what.

What’s that, you say? Comic, says I? Webcomic, in fact? Why yes! I’m working on starting up an autobiographical comic about my life as a way of improving my art skills. I have a few different reasons, one of them is that I’m tired of having offline journals and what not, trying to keep track of them. Besides, maybe some people will even learn from my mistakes. It could be a nice possibility.

Still working on my video game (World of Trouble), not sure if I’ve mentioned it on here. Been interesting learning all the different parts of game design and programming. Not sure that I’ll continue in C# past this project though.. It’s taught me a lot, but I’m not the biggest fan of it.

OH! Over on my facebook page I’ve been working on a 365 days of self portraits using my camera, been a lot of fun so far. Hoping to continue that, but I might move it over to Flickr or something so that I can post something about it here.

Back to the webcomic for a moment, it comes with it’s own theme.  I think I’m going to give the plugin and theme a try, maybe have to look into making my own theme some more. Funny that now that I’ve started pulling away from school (For various reasons) I’m finally starting to get a real education. Maybe I’m just the type to learn better from doing… Then again, aren’t most people?

On a personal note I’m looking at restarting a DND group for the amount of time a good friend of mine is in town. And my physical training is shaping up well, even though I’ve yet to go swimming today. Maybe after that belly dancing student night tonight.

EDIT: Well bloody heck. I keep getting an error:
Parse error: syntax error, unexpected T_STRING, expecting T_OLD_FUNCTION or T_FUNCTION or T_VAR or ‘}’ in /home/corbinis/public_html/wp-content/plugins/mangapress/includes/mangapress-classes.php on line 41

Problem is that when I load the file in question up in Dreamweaver, there is no T_STRING anywhere on line 41.  So there are bugs and issues to sort out. Hopefully they help take care of themselves, or I manage to solve this before I start uploading comics. To victory over the machine I go!

EDIT the second: BAH So it might not be a manga+press issue after all on account of the fact that I loaded up version the first (Manga+Press 1.0) and got the same results. Bah. BAH!!! So I think to fix this I’m going to have to reinstall wordpress ALONG with everything else… but I need to figure out how to back up my entries first. I suspect this will be a “Later this evening project” on account of all the swimming and bellydancing I need to do.

New Interface

December 11th, 2008

Well lately I’ve been drawing inspiration from a great many sources. But I am writing here for a few reasons. The first is that while UI’ve just upgraded to WordPress 2.6.5 a couple weeks ago, I just had to upgrade to wordpress 2.7 today. But I’ve become a bit of an old hat at it, so it was quick and relatively painless.

And I like the new wordpress interface, I think it will be fun when it comes time to work on my theme.

On that note I’ve also been catching up on most of my projects. Especially Net.Art, though I’m still behind, I’ve picked up a lot on CSS and different ways of using it. I still need to study layout and design options as well as how to achieve them, as it hasn’t quite sunk into my brain yet.

Working on applying for my internship and setting up my portfolio, so also reteaching myself flash. There is my animation project that I’ve been slaving over in my mind, so hopefully I’ll be able to finish that (Though I’m going to try to develope a purely digital process of working on it, so that I can work on it in more places).

Also I have links to write about before I get into my project in detail. I’m certain they are all Visual Inspiration links:

First is Newgrounds.com, an older net site hosting tons of flash videos and games. A great time-waster and at the same time reveals many unpolished gems. Lots of addicting stuff too!

Next up is Questionable Content. This website is one that I check almost daily. Though the humor is not always SFW, I find it cheers me on and encourages me.

Following that is Youtube. A great place for finding instructional videos on almost anything as well as for listening to music almost anywhere, a must have for checking.

One Manga is a comic site for translations of japanese comics. The sense of flow in many of these is amazing, there are a few such as Bakuman that I turn to whenever I need inspiration.

CSS Zen Garden is a relatively new discovery for me, but has been a huge aid in learning CSS through examples.

ImagineFX is similar to Deviantart in that it is an artist community, but rather then the catch all approach that DA has, IFX has a more narrow focus towards Fantasy and Sci-fi art. While these are not only my favourite genres, IFX also has a great collection of tutorials.

On now to projects…

One of the major problems I had with these projects was to learn CSS. When I was first taking Net.Art a few years ago, tables was the norm and CSS was just this new thing that people were trying (as far as I knew). Now CSS is everywhere, and it’s hard to imagine how I ever got more then a stone’s throw away while learning how to use it.

After spending days fooling around and playign with code trying to get it right, only to give up in many ways due to time constraints (But I’m still learning, might even come around to work on it some more later).  Other difficulties included not throwing the monitor out the window when things got to frustrating.

All in all, it has been a valuable experience, though I’d do it differently if I have a third time around.

Technical Links Redux

November 21st, 2008

Today I have added two new Technical Resources.

First up is W3Schools, a link I’m sure anyone teaching themselves flash has found extremely useful.  It’s a collection of step by step tutorials on how to do things (Not just in flash but in other areas as well).

Second is DevX, Which is similar but tends to focus more on explaining the concepts used in different web languages. It also has sections on programming languages.

Now that links are spoken of, I’d like to bring up the topic of focus and determination again. Seeing as I’ve set myself the goal of having the new version of wordpress installed on my blog by tomorrow night (Along with other goals of mine), I have a lot of work to do ahead of me! Especially since I don’t want to lose the work I’ve put into my current style. SO I shall have to move ahead on making my own style for this blog.

Among the advantages of such, this will allow me to better establish my unique web identity (Much more so then my current variation on the default style). And it’ll be a useful learning experience, particularly with the work I need to do in learning various web technologies. It’ll also allow me to better keep a finger on the pulse of what’s hot and cutting edge on the net, which is always a plus.

Until next time!

Witness the Fitness?

November 21st, 2008

Witness the Fitness was a possible name for the Health and Wellness Center when it was under construction at the University of Lethbridge (Where I am currently attending to work on a degree in New Media). The acronym was particularly popular amongst the students.

Now on the subject of site design and management, I have 2 things:

First is that apparently I require an update to wordpress (Oh JOY)

Second is that I am getting a lot of spam on certain entries.

Now we all seek attention on the internet, more pageviews is more potential capital to be gained, a symbol of doing well in it’s own way. But negative attention occurs and we instead have a ton of spam, which is frustrating for a moderator and for people looking for content in comments.

Martialing an Art

November 21st, 2008

Recently it was decided that I should be developing a martial art (Extension of, if you can’t do, teach) in that I need a measure of discipline and ability in my life that I currently lack.

To do so I should set down the concepts I wish to include.

1.Flow – A martial art is about moving your body, and often involves moving from one position or style to another. Being able to flow between stances or footworks is probably a good advantage

2. Movement – Learning Parkour is something I want as part of it, area and target denial being excellent strategies for self defense

3. Efficiency – Using your own or your opponents energy to the best ability is especially important. In a real situation running out of energy can lead to bad situations.

4. Determination – One of the hardest things to do with any long term goal is to stay motivated. Some of us are lucky enough that through training or practice we develope the habit of success, for keeping motivated. It is one of the things I want to develope through training.

That’s all for now, but I think it’s a pretty solid base. Now to practice some Tai Chi!

Getting Organized!

October 14th, 2008

Well, todays topic is of special interest to me.  I am extremely disorganized person, and it leaks into almost every aspect of my professional and personal life. So now I’m focusing on learning these skills, logic being that if I’m organized, I’ll have more time for my projects! I found this website, and it told me these three principles of organization:

  1. Get it together.
  2. Break it down.
  3. Track it.

I just downloaded a new app on my phone, I’ll have to see if it works for keeping track of this stuff.

On the New Links

October 5th, 2008

Couple new links in no particular order, first up is Bluehost, my web host.  Here is where the site and my little projects are stored for the most part. They’ve provided me decent service since I first signed up a couple years ago. The site has been through several incarnations since then.

The next is one of several new wordpress links is their Theme Website. I am using this to browse for new ideas and I’ll be referencing other themes from the site as I design my own style for the blog.

Also from wordpress is the codex, a wealth of information on how wordpress works.  I should have been reading through this sooner, I might have made fewer mistakes in creation and implementation of this site.

Similar in nature is the wordpress support forums, another store of information.

Lastly, is not a visual resource in the usual sense of having a refference source, but Alchemy is a downloadable program for drawing that creates a very free form sort of image.  I find this to be excellent for decluttering my head of ideas.

Those are the links, back to some studying!

Technical Resources

October 5th, 2008

In regards to the class assignment portion of the blog, I’ve posted 4 Technical Resources and 1 Visual Resource. Today I would like to discuss a recent item on the wordpress blog as well as another matter of interest.

First up, this article from October 1st. I looked over the design document detailing how things are supposed to work in the new version.  I have to say, it looks pretty slick, but I’m not sure how much it will affect this blog. Also, I now know that I need to backup any of the style sheets I edited for this site. Don’t want to rewrite all my code, but I think I’m learning more about how style sheets from all that.

Furthermore, while I’m learning a lot, I don’t think I’ve put enough effort or work into my projects for school. While I will be devoting more time to those projects as well as documenting them on here, I feel I also need to take time for myself.

EDIT: Laughing a bit to myself, as it seems I added my Links into the sidebar the hard way.  I’ve just discovered a links tool in the WordPress dashboard. Lesson learned, work smarter instead of harder.

One for the Creative Team

October 2nd, 2008

Punch. Jab. Thrust.

In drama, we use verbs to help work out a scene, determine how to deliver a line, and determine what we want from our scene partner. I wonder if the same is true of design? It’s been a great morning, trying out new things, updating the blog to the latest WordPress document, I think I’m going to have to figure out how to seperate my current work into a new WordPress Design.  Don’t think I’d distribute, but it would be a good way to practice my skills.

I finished playing around with the Twitter’s down at the bottom for now, I like them, but I think I’ll have to play with some of the settings to get it looking how I want. Should settle it soon enough though.

I want to share with you one of my inspirations, both in life and design:

http://threepanelsoul.com

Long ago there was a webcomic called “Machall”. It was a great comic, filled with college humor, wit, and hilarious parodies of real life. I followed it since it first started way back when, and so I’ve been able to watch the artist grow and develope, experiment with new styles.  It’s kept me going as an artist, kept me interested in always reaching for the next plateau.

Although I do find most other web comics just seem to waste my time (Too much time spent reading them or checking for updates), that one holds a special place in my heart.
